One attic bay of matted insulation beside a bay that is still clean

Field notes · Central Florida

The smell in the attic

The body can be gone and the odor stays, because it soaked the insulation and the wood. We take out what is soiled. We do not promise the smell ends that day.

  • One bay
  • Soiled insulation out
  • No odor promise

What comes out

The bay

We follow the odor and open the bay that holds it. We do not tear open the walls until something turns up.

The insulation

Fluids and fats soak the insulation and the wood. Soiled, packed, or urine-soaked comes out. Clean and dry stays.

The close first

The openings are shut before any new insulation goes back. New insulation in an open attic does not last.
